It's Time

A Poem For You and the World

It’s in the cloudy eyes
of a 12-year-old child who
already believes
deep into the bones
that he’s not good enough
for this world.
As every spark of promise
drains out of his tissues
and he begins to live a
dissociated life.

The Wonder that he is
existing as a hologram
in the long shadow of his doubts.
There for his taking
yet so far out of his reach.

ENOUGH. ENOUGH.

It’s taped to a wall
in the cubicles of our lives
forgotten
behind the post-its of all
the frivolous things
we worry about,
suffocated
under the rubber suit
of our critical minds.

It’s in the unease that wrinkles
the folds of our comforts
and spoils the taste
of the tried and true.

It’s dancing in the air
that brushes our skin
in that space we view as
nothing,
trained, as we are,
to only see what we can trust
even if it shrivels our heart
down to a tiny mound of rust.

ENOUGH. ENOUGH.

It’s in the bouncy bubbles
of our wild ideas
burst
by the gravity of our fears.

It’s in the nonsense
of a people
who yearn to tame the stars
yet argue all day long
about the labels to use
to keep themselves
small.

ENOUGH. ENOUGH.

It’s there
in the sticky wetness of our tears,
in the dead ends of our dreams,
in the rabbit hole of distractions
where we go to lose ourselves.

It’s there
when we feel we don’t belong,
when we do all we can
to disappear into the crowd,
when we tell ourselves
that all we do is wrong.

Why won’t you see me?
Why can’t you hear?

The boundless potential we ALL
carry within
holds us close with loving arms.
It never, ever leaves our side.

But a caged animal it is
and one that has been starved.
It’s simmering, it’s boiling
and now it’s rising up,
spilling out
through any way it finds;
as the shards
we spew at each other,
the blood that stains
our streets,
the faults that tear
the Earth apart.

Roaring for our attention,
destructive as it may seem,
so maybe
maybe
we can finally listen
to its sonar ping
syncing us back
to the wonders we all can be.

ENOUGH. ENOUGH.

Don’t you see what force it has?
Don’t you feel how much it wants you?

Believe, please believe.
You are so much more than this.

You are the sap that feeds the forests.
You are the particles of steel.
You are the echo in the flatland.
Triple rainbow across clear skies.
You are the tree that grows on rocks
and the wispy Northern lights.

You are everything at once.
You are ALL that’s yet to exist.

And it’s all there waiting for you
in the heat map of your body
in the helixes of your genes
if you’ll just believe
what you cannot see.

So STOP.
JUST STOP.

It’s time for you to be
the cosmic Wonder
you came here to be.
